Teaching & Learning during Self-isolation

During the pandemic, the Faculty members never stop teaching and learning by either launching webinars or being speaker of E-learning sessions conducted by other institutions.

2020 Orthodontic Webinars

Initiated and organised by Dr Yang Yangqi, Clinical Associate Professor in Orthodontics, a series of Orthodontic Webinars was launched under the Faculty’s Global Dental Campus.

With the fluid situation goes on, Faculty members have been doing online teaching. Dr Yang and her team and students were learning how to get used to the distance learning and found themselves adapted into the new learning method quick comfortably. “At the same time, many counties are facing the challenge of ‘lock-down’. This makes me to think about expansion of our distance learning. With most people working from home, the timetable arrangement is supposed to be relatively flexible. By taking this chance, we decided to initiate and arrange webinars given by overseas speakers so to enhance everyone’s learning both locally and internationally,” said Dr Yang.

She is grateful that her team is able to invite numbers of speakers from around the world. Time zone difference is a challenge for the arrangement of the webinars as some speakers are from America and Europe. “I really appreciate the speakers to accommodate Hong Kong’s time.” With the local time schedule, informative and diversified topics, the webinars received positive feedback from the students and some members of the Hong Kong Society of Orthodontics.

Dr Yang and her team will continue to seek more exciting collaboration. “This crisis may result in our respective dental schools building virtual networks to share academic and research through distance learning, in the future,” summed Dr Yang.

Endodontic Cooperative Video Series

Dr Neelakantan, Prasanna, Clinical Assistant Professor in Endodontics, gave a lecture on “Root canal debridement: Current concepts and future perspectives” at the Endodontic Cooperative Video Series organised by the University of Adelaide in association with all the dental schools in Australia and New Zealand on 21 April 2020.

Being recognised as one of the top researchers in endodontic microbiology and root canal disinfection. Dr Prasanna was invited as guest speaker to share on the latest evidence base, specifically the profoundly translational aspects of the research done by his group from the Faculty of Dentistry HKU. The webinar was attended by the postgraduate students of endodontics and the faculty members in endodontics from the dental schools in Australia and New Zealand.

“It was a great experience meeting many top researchers and lecturing to them online. Furthermore, the residents were very enthusiastic and had lots of questions. It was an enriching experience. We had several interesting discussions on the cutting-edge and futuristic topics”, said Dr Prasanna.

His session of webinar concluded in success with positive feedback:
