Research

Anchor "microbrush" on your teeth and brush "bugs" away

This is not toothbrush, this is "microbrush" which is much smaller than toothbrush and even invisible to naked eyes. Inspired by the method which reduce protein adsorption and platelet adhesion in a blood-material interface, researchers in HKU Faculty of Dentistry developed a novel way to clean your tooth with a tooth-targeting (polydopamine-induced) polyethylene glycol (PEG). This modified PEG could anchor on your tooth surface like tethered chains, and stretch away from the tooth surface leading to a "brush"-like conformation.

Acting like a brush, the modified PEG is able to sweep the bacteria away without killing them, this is favorable for maintaining the original ecosystem in the mouth. This modified PEG has potential to be a complementary way to daily tooth clean process and help maintain your oral hygiene.
